Crowns & Bridges
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases part or all of the tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, ceramic crowns are the most widely used. They are highly durable and compatible with oral structures, but like most dental restorations they may eventually need to be replaced. Ceramic crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Large worn or broken fillings
- Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
A bridge is two or more crowns that are linked together to replace missing teeth.
Bridges utilize anchor or abutment teeth on either side of the space where the tooth is or teeth are missing. In between are the pontic teeth that replace the missing teeth. A bridge is cemented in place and is not removable.
