Sedation
In addition to standard local anesthetics, we offer both Nitrous Oxide and Oral Conscious Sedation.
NITROUS OXIDE (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, breathable gas. Although it will not numb you, it has the effect of putting you in a relaxed state. There are no lingering effects, as they fade away as soon the gas is turned off.
Nitrous oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. It is safe, and is always blended with oxygen when administered. Patients are never left alone and are closely monitored while using it.
ORAL ONSCIOUS SEDATION (OCS)
For patients that require a higher level of sedation, we offer OCS. With this method, mild to moderate sedatives are taken orally. Even while sedated, patients are awake and able to respond and function on their own. As with all sedation, patients are closely monitored.
While patients maintain consciousness, we require that patients are driven to and from their appointments, and we ask that they are monitored at home for the remainder of the day. Some patients will experience mild “amnesia”, and may not recall the dental appointment.
Reasons for OCS:
- Patients with anxiety
- Patients who have difficulty getting numb
- Lengthy procedures or extensive treatment
We will screen you to ensure that you are medically clear for OCS.
